In Memoriam: Luke Stremlau
The Bloomington Election Commission is deeply saddened to share that Executive Director Luke Stremlau, 42, of Normal, passed away on Saturday, October 11, 2025, following a brief illness.
For the past three years, Luke led the Commission with professionalism, fairness, and genuine dedication to serving the voters of Bloomington. He believed deeply in the value of a nonpartisan election process, often saying that “a nonpartisan commission takes politics out of the process and leads to better-run elections”. His work reflected that belief every day.
Luke’s leadership and commitment extended far beyond McLean County. He served as First Vice President of the Association of Election Commissions of Illinois (AECOI), an organization providing bipartisan oversight for more than 1.7 million registered voters statewide. He was also active in the Illinois Association of County Clerks and Recorders (IACCR) and frequently contributed to Illinois State Board of Elections advisory committees, offering insight, collaboration, and practical solutions that helped strengthen election administration across Illinois.
Luke will be remembered as a respected leader, trusted colleague, and kind friend whose integrity and dedication to public service set the highest standard. His loss will be felt deeply by all who had the privilege of working with him.
During this period of transition, Stephanie Hanner will serve as Acting Executive Director until a new director is appointed. The Bloomington Election Commission remains committed to carrying forward Luke’s work and maintaining the integrity, transparency, and professionalism he championed. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Luke’s family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched.
