Individuals register to vote using their current residential address. They then are sent a voter card that includes: information about the districts they are eligible to vote in, their polling place, and our office contact information.
Properly registered voters are eligible to vote in one of three different ways:
1. At their polling place on Election Day
2. At Early Voting sites, usually beginning 40 days before an election
3. Applying for a Vote By Mail ballot, beginning 90 days before an election.
To register to vote in Illinois, individuals must provide identification showing their name and current residential address. Voters wishing to register and vote on Election Day must provide two IDs, including one with their current address.
For Early Voting and Election Day, voters are identified by signature, and do not need to show identification unless challenged.
